Railgun Electromagnet Weapon: Navy’s Most Powerful Weapon?

Posted on 12 December 2010 by pinoytutorial

Just recently the US Navy made a record setting test for the railgun, which is believed to be the most powerful weapon of the US Navy. This weapon has been a dream for decades and it seems that this dream is turning into reality. Basically, a railgun is an electric gun that has the ability to accelerate a conductive projectile along a pair of metal rail that basically has the same principles as the homopolar motor. This metal rails actually allow the passage of a large electric current to pass through the projectile and interacts with a strong magnetic field generated by the rails.

These railguns are commonly found in shoot’em- up video games as a very destructible weapon that has the ability to kill monsters and aliens, and now this railgun is not only a part of video games, but also an upcoming powerful weapon of the US Navy. As a result of the test, it was proven that the railgun is capable of hitting the target even within 100 miles or more within a few minutes only. The Navy was able to make around 33 megajoule firing, which is definitely more than three times the previous record set by the US Navy back in 2008.

What this weapon can do is quite unattainable in a traditional weapon. The railgun electromagnet weapon is basically incredible and powerful as compared to the traditional weapons that we have today. In addition to this, the bullet of this weapon relies upon kinetic energy in order to do the damage. The railgun offers around 2 to 3 times the velocity of a traditional gun and targets within an estimated time of 6 minutes.

According to Roger Ellis, the electromagnetic program manager, the Navy has invested around $ 200 million worth of investment for this program that started back in 1995. And the Navy was inspired to do this project as they try to eliminate the presence of explosives in the ship and bring significant safety and logistics benefits as well.

However, the Navy has a long way to go before it can finally turn the railgun into a working weapon. So let us just wait for more details.
