Samsung Galaxy Spica I5700: Newest Android phone for Asia

Posted on 17 November 2009 by pinoytutorial

If you have been following the Android craze this month, you will see that each release of droid-phones are on a barrage as we speak. Starting from the onslaught of Verizon having sold over 250,000 droid phones for the 1st week in US, to the shipping of Sony Ericsson’s classy Xperia X10 model – soon reaching the borders of UK on February 2010)  One could say that soon we will be facing an army of android powered phones on a global scale. With all this hype, I know many of you are wondering, “When will the Android phones be available in Asia?”. Fortuitously, Samsung holds answers again to your android-related questions.

Remember their recent release of Samsung I7500? Rumored to be the first Android Phone in Asia? A recent statement confirms, Samsung will be releasing a newer version of the I7500 – The ‘Galaxy Spica’ (I5700) which is network compatible to quad-band GSM/EDGE and supports the 900/2100MHz Asian and European 3G bands (Won’t work with US 3G networks though)

If you will see the pictures, one may notice a striking similarity between the two galaxian phones serve on a cupcake design.

The New Samsung Galaxy Spica I5700

As much as you like the new colors and the slight redesign, you can see there’s nothing really spectacular with the new Galaxy phone, however, if you will take a peek on the specs it looks like Samsung had pumped some goodies with Spica. According to the statement

The Galaxy Spica shows faster and more powerful performance than ever before by providing 800 MHZ application processor, so users can enjoy a variety of applications that can be downloaded from Android Market™

“Samsung has made a great effort to strengthen our smartphone line up with a wide range of innovative products for every user,” said JK Shin, Executive Vice President and Head of the Mobile Communications Division, Samsung Electronics. “The Samsung Galaxy Spica, powered by Android, is the perfect fit for users who want to enjoy a powerful and fast mobile experience”, he added.

Samsung Galaxy Spica provides an exceptional multimedia experience by supporting DivX for the first time on Android-powered phones to eliminate the hassle of file format conversions. Equipped with DNSe 2.0 for better sound quality and 3.5 mm ear jack, the Galaxy Spica offers the fully comprehensive multimedia feature set. Moreover, a long enough battery life (1500mAh) allows its users to enjoy all the applications and multimedia content.

If you will look at the I7500, its CPU is only limited to 528MHz, no DivX compatibility and has a battery of 1440 mAh only. At least on I5700, they upgraded it – A not so glamorous ascend nonetheless better than nothing, right?

Other features of Galaxy Spica are not yet fully disclosed by Samsung, so we will need further announcements. On our view, the new Samsung Spica is a nice way to start the Android craze in Asia but I wouldn’t expect this to become that popular. In our experience, Samsung phones has a tendency to lack with some of the specs thus making it your next average-joe phone. Hopefully, Samsung will finally notice this deficiency and it would give a way for them to improve their future release.

So would you get this new android phone or what?
