With the recent release of the overhauled Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 it is hard not to ponder how will it go against the slim and powerful iPad 2. We made a brief comparison about the tablets’ specs, features and price tags.
The Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 has indeed improved since it was unveiled at MWC in Barcelona. During the iPad 2′s unveiling, Samsung admitted about its tablet’s shortcomings including inadequate parts and high price point. And just recently, true to its word, Samsung unveiled (not one but two) refreshed tablets that are both thinner and lighter than the iPad 2.
Additionally, both Galaxy Tab 8.9 and 10.1 has higher camera specs than the iPad 2. The tablets are also capable of recording and playing full HD content and supports Flash contents which the iPad 2 lacks. On the other hand, Apple has the upper hand in terms of online apps plus overall mass appeal.
Price wise, both tablet brands are competitive but we have to give it to Samsung. The 16GB WiFi only models (iPad 2 and 10.1 Tab) are priced at $499 while the Galaxy Tab 8.9 is only at $469. It scales up to the 32 GB model where the iPad 2 and 10.1 Tab stand at $599 a piece while the 8.9 Tab is at $569.
Many are claiming that the new Sammy Tablet versions (both 10.1 and 8.9) will be the iPad 2 “killer”. Killer is a strong word and we’re not going to use it, first because it’s an overused term and second, we feel that even though Samsung managed to edge out Apple in the specs department the latter will still have more sales. In other words, Samsung just doesn’t have enough firepower to topple down the new iPad slate.
Why? Its because of “branding” and “prestige”. Lugging an iPad 2 around will give its users more cheers and applause than carrying a Samsung Tablet. Most of the time, it’s really an emotional thing for some people which gadget to buy (any guilty souls here?). However, if you’re on the geeky-side and prefers a beefier tablet then perhaps, you can go for the Galaxy Tab (considering the same price point).
The Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 is scheduled for release on June 8 while the smaller 8.9 Tab will be up “sometime” this summer. Take your pick! There’s no right or wrong choices here, anyway.
