At the Mobile World Congress held in Barcelona last February 15, Samsung has unveiled their Halo to the public. This is of course not the circle of light, instead Halo is a codename that refers to the latest smartphone from world’s largest electronics and technology Korean company.

samsung i8520

Beam, the product’s official name, is a pico projector phone that is said to be running on Android 2.1 OS and an interface of TouchWiz 3.0. This phone is quite an impressive electronic product with its integrated pico projector (made by Texas Instrument)as its key feature. The TouchWiz capability of i8520 is akin yet slightly different from the features found in Bada, another innovative handheld phone from Samsung.

If you have been an avid fan of Samsung phones, you might notice that the i8520 seems familiar since a similar phone was already announced by the company last year but was eventually cancelled, the Samsung i7410.

This sophisticated projector phone measures 123 x 59.8 x 14.9 in millimeters with a large if not big 3.7″ and 800 x 480 pixel WGVA Super AMOLED display that stands out at the front of the i8520. It has a network support for HSDPA at 7.2Mbps or HSUPA at 5.76Mbps UMTS (900/1900/2100),EDGE or GPRS (850/900/1800/1900).

Its camera is an 8 mega pixel AF with built in flash that can capture high definition videos (H.264, H.263, MPEG4, Divx/Xvid, VC-1, 720p@30fps(de/encoding)) and is declared to be capable of recording 720p resolution at 30 frames per second. This camera implementations makes the i8520 applicable for instant video capture and playback of its recorded video through the integrated projector. The format of audio files it can play are MP3, OGG, AAC, AAC+, eAAC+, AMR-NB, AMR-WB, WMA, WAV, MID and AC3. It is also loaded with an FM radio with RDS, 3.5mm Ear jack, 3D Sound Effect(Dual Speaker).

The value added features found in the Samsung i8520 are supports for 3.5 G, WiFi (b/g/n), Specialized Projector UI, Hybrid Widgets, IM, Email, DLNA, Samsung Kies, Push Service(for SNS, IM and Email), high speed 2.0 USB and Bluetooth capability. Its internal memory of at least 2 gigabytes (4Gb ROM / 3Gb RAM + 16GB MoviNAND)may still be upgraded through an external MicroSD memory of up to 32 GB.

All these features are powered by its 1800mAh battery having a talk time of 470 minutes on 3G mode or 850 minutes on a 2G mode. Stand by time is up to 530 hours in 3G and 630 on 2G. This phone will be officially launched during the summer.
