With the CES almost here, the participating companies are starting to pull out their big guns to grab the audience’s attention. Samsung of course has to get into the action as well, and wowed in front of a crowd at its own press conference with a Series 9 laptop dubbed the Ultrabook.

The Ultrabook takes some cues from its Series 9 predecessors as a 13.3-inch long laptop, with a slightly larger 15-inch model, and a thin, sleek design. But while the old Series 9 laptops are about 0.64 inches thick and 2.8 pounds, this one gets even thinner, measuring at 0.5 inches. It’s almost scary just how thin and light weight it is at 2.5 pounds, but Samsung has mad sure that it pays extra attention to the performance of the wafer-thin laptop.
The first thing about the Ultrabook is that it has backlit keys, not an easy feat considering a device this thin, but that’s not all. Apparently Samsung has managed to shove a 1.6GHz Intel Core i5 2467M processor, 128GB SSD storage, 4GB DDR3 RAM, HD Intel Graphics 3000 card, two internal speakers, and a 6-cell lithium polymer battery that can run for 7 hours straight, with 3 additional hours on the 15-inch model. As Samsung gained generally good response for the SuperBright tech used on screens, the Ultrabook will also have it on its display alongside a resolution of 1600 x 900px.
The Samsung Series 9 ultrabook will be in stores starting February 27, with the 13.3-inch laptop selling for $1,399, and its slightly larger sibling priced at $ 1,499. It’s thinner and lighter than Apple’s Macbook Air, but a little more expensive, which may be a dealbreaker for some. However, the real test of a laptop’s worth is the performance, and the Ultrabook may be a good competitor for the Air and other ultraweight laptops out there.
