Seagate Technology was among the last to enter the SSD market after WD, Fujitsu and Hitachi. It was notable to discuss that Seagate tested the waters of SSD market 2 years ago by venturing into NAND flash technology. It introduced the 2.5in Momentus , a hybrid laptop disk drive combining disk storage with flash memory. In an interview, Seagate explained that it was waiting for indicators if it was the right timing to enter the market.

Seagate comes out with solutions when it makes business sense to do so, when our customers tell us that they’re ready… We’ve seen lower adoption than what’s being hyped in the market. Now with SSD approaching a $1 billion market in the next calendar year, it makes sense for us to enter the volume market.

We will be waiting for other models of Seagate SSDs to enter the market. I doubt if it is really the right timing for consumers to purchase SSDs nowadays since several manufacturers are newbies on this industry. And it’s impractical to buy SSDs today since they are very expensive. It is plausible to say that Solid State Drives are the future of hard drive technology but for now, we need to watch for more updates.
