Instant Messaging or IM for short refer to the use of real-time text-based communication. It is a type of communications service that allows one to privately chat with another over the internet like a telephone conversation which may use words and/or voice. This type of messaging became popular because of its speed, accessibility and privacy. This system alerts a person whenever somebody who appears on his/her list is online.

The world’s leading IM client, Skype is now open for downloads. However, this is merely a testing stage. The software development has been in its beta version. Meaning it is the third phase of development where the feature is complete. A feature is an outstanding or marked characteristic of a product or service.

A known feature of the new product, Skype 5, is 5-way video calling.  It means that up to 5 people can have an interaction within a single call. Video calling, which has been around for years, allow one-on-one communications in the internet. Now, that too is going to change.

According to Skype, they redesigned the calling experience, the new call view focuses on the ongoing call and takes away all possible disturbing factors like other conversations and gives an option of seeing the other conversation and data. Other features include improved video gallery snapshots which enable you to shoot short scenes that last for several seconds; improved browser plugins or those additional pieces of software that add extra capabilities to your web browser; and reduced false positives on browser plugin phone number recognition.

Despite its advantages, this beta version 5-way calling feature is for premium meaning it is not for free. The call host is not displayed anymore in the user interface and Windows 2000 is not supported in this Beta version. Also it requires that all 5-way callers shall also be Skype users. It requires fast Internet connection and a reasonably new computer system.

These disadvantages mean that the product is not yet in its ready version. As Skype tells us, it is still on its testing stage. The 5-way calling system is one of its kind, however, not everyone are really into 5-way calling since some prefer one-on-one calls. So there’s no saying that it will guarantee success in the market. Also, these calls are merely Skype to Skype calls so everyone in your contacts needs to download it for a fee. It also requires some new specifications before you can actually download it which a few computers may not have. Thus, it may be highly incompatible with your laptops or PCs. This application is only for Windows which can make it rather incapable for other programs.
