The British Royal Navy have an ingenious, fun and creative solution to train sailors onboard British warships. Sony PSPs (Playstation portable) specially programmed which contain math, physics and simulation programs helping sailors continue their education where there are scarcity of training space. Also, using the portable console is a cost-effective solution since several trainees were dropping out from the Navy to retake other courses.
The Royal Navy purchased 230 Sony PSP and distributed them first to Marine warfare engineering technicians, who are in-charge of radar, sonar and other communication systems. If proven successful, more Sony PSP will be given to other cadets onboard.
If you wonder what’s inside a Navy Sony PSP, they are composed of study modules prepared as slides by military instructors. Each module will last between 8-12 minutes . The British Navy spent almost £50,000 (~75,000 USD) on Sony PSPs and the customized programs.
We certainly agree that using technology and gadgets to teach people is a fun learning experience. You certainly remembered the day when your teacher in class bored you to death, and how you wish the class would be dismissed earlier. Using Sony PSP counters that by inducing interactivity and fun among students creating a more conducive learning environment.
