If you’re a fan of the adult-themed cartoon series South Park, raise your hand. South Park Digital Studios has teamed up with THQ and Obsidian Entertainment to bring you a new South Park video game called South Park: The Game. THQ has released a few details of the game to gaming magazine Game Informer, as well as some images for fans to feast their eyes on.
Not to be confused with South Park, a first-person shooter game for the original Playstation, or South Park 10: The Game, a mobile game, this new game delves into the role-playing aspect of the gaming industry, with surreal twists that only South Park can give.
Players are put in the shoes of a customizable silent protagonist who’s new in town. The goal is to be accepted by peers in South Park, most especially the infamous gang of Cartman, Kyle, Stan and Kenny. To do that, you must pretend to role-play a certain class (adventurer, paladin, rogue, wizard, and an unannounced fifth one that Cartman made up). In true South Park style, the pretend game turns into a real-life adventure for your character, and you’ll need to fight to move on.
Battles will be carried out in turn-based RPG style much like the Final Fantasy series, and with timed presses of a certain button, you’ll be able to add in extra damage. You’ll also be able to make a pre-emptive strike if you initiate combat.
If this game seems ambitious, that’s because South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone have very high hopes of this one, as they’re both avid gamers themselves. They definitely want this game to make up for the less-than-stellar reception to the previous games of their animated franchise.
The price tag still remains to be seen, but South Park: The Game is expected for the PS3, Xbox 360 and Windows PC sometime in the second half of 2012.
