Spring Design Alex E-Book Reader Unveiled! Specs Review

Posted on 24 March 2010 by pinoytutorial

Need a twist on your usual and conventional E-Book reader? How about getting two screens that display two different things? Nice huh? Introducing the Spring Design Alex E-Book Reader that will break the monotonous outlook everybody has on an e-book reader. The new Alex will flaunt a 6 inch E-ink reader (600×800 pixels) and a 3.5 inch (480 x 320-resolution) Touchscreen LCD screen powered by yours truly… Android.

Now this one will cost you $399 but more than just an e-book reader it surely have a lot more things to give and show off (we will see if it is really worth the $399 you’ll cash out)! Spring Design Alex E-Book Reader measures 8.9 inches by 4.7 inches and about the ¼ inch thick. Now according to the people who were able to test drive this device they were dumbfounded by the looks of it! The experience was quite okay to the extent that it’s not so disappointing.

The reading part and listening to some good old music was quite great but when it comes to browsing the net things began to shatter and freeze, oops! Plus when they started typing in on the URL box the letters were displayed a few seconds behind, ouch! Makes me wonder if this one is really running an Android? Poor thing the device can barely crawl its way on displaying web page you could have finished your cup of coffee before you get to access what you want!

As for the battery life you may find it odd that this device can only last for six hours when both screens are on, but when the 3.5 inch colored screen is off it can manage to stay up for the whole twenty four hours. Unfortunately there is no sleep mode or standby button, the only option is to turn it off if you want to save some battery life. Some of the things you wouldn’t really like about Alex is that it doesn’t have 3G and a good ebook store to boot, though the consolation is that the capacitive screen is pretty responsive.

My last say about this ebook reader is that it’s quite better than Kindle 2 and a lot better if you don’t mind that it doesn’t have 3G.

Other specs:

  • MicroSD card slot
  • WiFi
  • USB port
  • Built-in speakers
  • Supports e-Books in EPUB, PDF, HTML and TXT formats

*Available for pre-order and will start shipping on April 14th
