Techcrunch Hacked: January 25

Posted on 26 January 2010 by pinoytutorial

Technology blog giant Techcrunch appears to be hacked today. The hack manages to totally put the whole techcrunch.com offline and unreachable. So far, its sub-websites (crunchgear.com, mobilecrunch.com, etc) appears to be still working properly.

Here’s a screenshot of the hack appearing whenever you visit TC’s pages.

Its still too early to tell if the URL (dupedb.com) has something to do with the hack or just a misdirection by the hacker. So far dupedb.com, appears to be your typical ‘smutty’ filesharing site.

According to inquistr.

As at 10:20pm PDT Monday (Jan 25) TechCrunch was offline with a message that simply stated “hi” on its main page (see image above.)

The new hacking comes as some have recently reported security issues with Rackspace, the host of TechCrunch, Mashable, and range of other sites, including The Inquisitr.

According to Keith Dsouza the hack seems to be not a DNS attack (famously done by the iranian cyber army, successfully defacing the mogul microblogging site twitter) But rather a server-sided exploitation.

So far techcrunch has no response with the issue, but one thing is for sure, Techcrunch’s night today isn’t going to be a cakewalk.

We will keep you guys posted.

Update 1: (3:55am EST) Techcrunch finally had a brief response to confirm that the attack was for real and they are still working to remedy the issue.

“Earlier tonight techcrunch.com was compromised by a security exploit.

We’re working to identify the exploit and will bring the site back online shortly.”

Update 2: Techcrunch is back now, silently.. Although, they still haven’t disclosed if they manage to track down who is the culprit for this server exploitation.

Update 3 – January 26, 2010: (estimated time 12:30 midnight 1:30 am EST) It appears TC got another dose of some hacking attack, now the hackers is showing more vulgarity. Here’s the excerpt of the attack.

So Arrington, how much did all the media coverage yesterday brought you in trough the welcome.html ad you forced people to? What a f**king retarded move was that you twat. You should be thanking me and s*cking on my f**king b*llsack for not deleting everyone on the box and publishing the mysql, if that’s what you want O.K, I can do that. Also, you fucking dickwads from sites like Yahoo!, BBC and plenty more, where the F**CK do you see adult content on

The vandal redundantly repeats, managing to deface TC pages, staying on top of the header for awhile.

Update 4: Techcrunch is working fine now, although they haven’t updated their statement about the hack.
