Tesla’s been hinting and teasing at the Model S since 2009, but it’s only now that we’re getting the details and price for the car. We’ll still have to wait till 2013, production starting next year, to actually get the car, but for now, Tesla Motors is giving us something concrete to back up their claims and promises about the electric car made years ago.

It’s a fast car, beating the Porche Carrera with an acceleration of 0 to 60mph in 6.5 seconds at the slowest and 4.4 seconds at the fastest. However, if you’re going for just a little more than what the base model can offer, there are also the Tesla Model S Performance, the Model S Signature, and the Model S Signature Performance cars to choose from, with prices changing as you go from one model to another.
What makes these cars different from each other? Luckily, Tesla’s put each car’s details in a handy comparison chart. Everything the base model has, the other cars also have, but with better features, of course.

Model S (base):
- battery comparison: 40 kWh ($49,900), 60 kWh ($59,900) or 85 kWh ($69,900) options (all with federal tax credit)
- 160 miles (40 kWh), 230 miles (60 kWh), or 300 miles (85 kWh) as estimated ranges at 55mph
- 17-inch touchscreen with Tech Package option (additional $3,750)
- Sound Studio Package option (additional $950)
- 19-inch standard tires
Model S Performance:
- $79,900
- 85 kWh battery
- 0 to 60mph in 4.4 seconds
- 17-inch touchscreen Tech Package option (additional $3,750)
- drive inverter
- Sound Studio Package option (additional $950)
- 19-inch standard tires
Model S Signature:
- $87,900
- 85 kWh battery
- 0 to 60mph in 5.6 seconds
- 17-inch touchscreen with standard Tech Package
- Nappa Leather interior
- Active Air suspension
- standard Sound Studio Package
- 21-inch standard tires
Model S Signature Performance:
- $97,900
- 85 kWh battery
- 0 to 60 in 4.4 seconds
- 17-inch touchscreen standard Tech Package
- drive inverter
- Nappa Leather interior
- Active Air support and sport traction control
- standard Sound Studio Package
- 21-inch Performance standard tires
The choices may seem a little daunting, especially for those unversed in cars, but it all boils down to this: the Model S is the base, and the Signature Performance packs the most power and high-end specs of the Tesla Model S line-up. There are also more options listed on the Model S page for potential buyers to mix and match for a car most suited to them. Why not give it a try?
