Posted on 24 December 2009 by pinoytutorial

Christmas is coming in soon and everyone who has not gotten gifts yet is in a rush to buy their gifts, causing huge traffic in malls and outlet stores. With the internet, people are avoiding the crowds and buying their gifts online through online marketplaces like Ebay and Amazon, but they experienced some holiday troubles as well.

December 23, 2009 in Northern California, the UltraDNS experienced a Denial-of-Service (DoS) attack for roughly an hour. Everyone who was shopping for their Christmas gifts late got affected by this attack. Amazon along with its sister sites were slowed down considerably and some stopped working even, and a lot of sites went offline. Some sites include Walmart.com, Gap.com, Expedia.com, and Second Life. According to NeuStar, the attack started at 7:45pm EST.

The UltraDNS Support Team said that they were able to put filters and mitigate the attack at around 1:30 GMT, and the attack decreased by 2/3. At 1:45 GMT, there was no longer any attack and everything was back to normal. They are still in the process of finding out what happened and where the attack came from. There was another attack back in March where sites were also sent offline.

The Support Team should be able to find the source soon figure out how to stop these attacks. For now, all the last minute shoppers are starting to get back to finding gifts for those close to them and hopefully by Christmas we’ll all have our gifts wrapped and ready.
