One of the most anticipated events in the world of video games is the Video Game Awards (VGA), which is being hosted by Spike TV. It is a global event that is broadcasted on over 175 countries as it honors achievements and great games of the gaming industry. It is their 8th annual event that will be shown on December 11, 2010 at the LA Convention Center in Los Angeles, California at 8pm ET/5pm PT. The awards show started in 2003 when video game awards were never common before. Now, every Video Game Awards have live performances and guests from movies, music and television—just like any award show there is.
The things that people anticipate in the awards night are the upcoming trailers and games by different studios. For the VGA 2010, they will be presenting the most anticipated games of 2011 such as Saints Row 3 and Guillermo del Toro’s franchise from THQ. Another anticipated game next year is the new Batman: Arkham City, where it will reveal the deepest secrets of the Batman.
Despite being anticipated and its success, the VGA has been receiving a lot of criticisms on both winners and the nominees from the gaming industry. When nominees have been selected, they will be posting it on their website and winners will be determined by online polling. Critics are saying that it is more of a popularity contest and the winners, most of the time, do not deserve to win.
But whatever is said against them, this does not stop fans from looking forward for this year’s Video Game Awards as the nominations are bigger than last year. And of course, just like any other awards show, one of the most anticipated awards is the Game of the Year. The games nominated in this category are: Call of Duty: Black Ops from Activision/Treyarch, God of War III by Sony Computer Entertainment, Halo: Reach by Microsoft, Mass Effect 2 by Electronic Arts/BioWare, and Red Dead Redemption by Rockstar Games. Last year’s winner was Uncharted 2: Among Thieves and fans were not disappointed since it is one of the greatest games of 2009. Best Shooter Category are: Battlefield: Bad Company 2 from Electronic Arts, BioShock 2 from 2K Games, Call of Duty: Black Ops from Activision/Treyarch, and Halo: Reach by Microsoft.
The top games for this year are as follows, with their number of nominations: Mass Effect 2 leads the VGA with ten nominations, followed by Red Dead Redemption with nine and a tie for Call of Duty: Black Ops and Halo: Reach by Microsoft with seven nominations each.
