Last June, Microsoft revealed an interesting version of the Windows 7 called as the Windows Embedded Compact 7 enabling users to use the rich UI of Windows 7 on tablets faster than porting the whole Windows 7 Desktop OS. In other words, WEC 7 is like the “tablet-version” of Windows 7.
As of today, the company has just announced that there will be a 180-day trial version of this tablet-platform and its final version is already available for download on Microsoft Download Center with a project name “Chelan”.
Aside from tablet usability, WEC7 OS is also planned to be utilized on medical devices, retail systems even on Windows smartphones. Take note that Microsoft would still continue to adopt Windows 7 for its tablets targeted for business whereas the Embedded Compact platform are meant for “consumption devices”. In addition to that, it has other features like: ARM v7 support, can run x86, ARM and MIPS CPU; customizable UI, Flash 10.1 support, Silverlight, a new browser which is adaptated from IE7 and IE8 and more.
As of the moment, the list of tablets running this new platform is still hazy. Let’s see how this one plays out after the trial-period!
Anyway, if you think this isn’t interesting enough, you can wait for the Windows 8 tablets predicted to be announced on the later quarter of this year.
