Photon is the codename assigned to the upcoming version of the Windows Mobile operating system. This OS meant for mobile handsets is developed by the world famous Bill Gates-empire Microsoft Corporation and is built on the Windows Embedded CE 6.0 kernel. It should have already been released back in 2009 but delays have prevented Microsoft from doing so and instead introduced the Windows Mobile 6.5 instead.
Current reports declared that information has leaked from inside Microsoft compounds regarding the sensational Photon OS or Windows Mobile 7. According to news from some websites (PPC Geeks and MobileTechWorld), the Photon will be formally introduced to the public this coming February 15 at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona but devices are speculated to be out on September 2010.
It is also said to incorporate some elements from the Zune HD( a portable media player, also from Microsoft)and to integrate Xbox 360 enhancements like Gamer tag, achievements, friends, avatars, merchandising, etc. The Zune software is said to be handling all syncing activities. Its home screen is said to be designed with a fresh appearance, however, there is said to be no support for custom interfaces like Sense and TouchFLO. Mobile specific details like Silverlight 3.0 is said to be present in WM7 as well as adequate system support for social networking. Interested consumers will be offered by the Windows Mobile Marketplace by a “Try before you Buy” option in addition to an API prop.
The WM7 that is yet to be released will have no flash support. Users will not be able to multitask but instead, the WM 7 has push notifications. It is also not .NET Compact Framework backwards compatible thereby old applications will not be able to work. The browser codebase is that of the Internet Explorer 7 for desktop with some IE 8 functions and features.
