If modular computing devices are your thing then certainly, you’ve come across with some of the products by XI3 – one of the leading makers of modular computers. Likewise, the company announced today a surprising development on its product-line, revealing the first ChromiumPC under its modular unit.

On a nutshell, the XI3 ChromiumPC is a “cube-like, small form factor, low power” modular PC, said to be adaptable to perform specific functions. Interestingly, just because it’s new doesn’t mean its innards are half-baked. In fact, it was disclosed that XI3 has been developing this device as early as 2009 – hinting that Google may have revealed ChromeOS with an earlier time frame with manufacturers.
For its specifications, it has three main parts: processor module, primary I/O module and secondary I/O module; whereas the first module holds the CPU / RAM while the remaining module holds the misc. hardware in place (e.g: Ethernet, video / power connectors, ports). To be more specific, you can customize the ChromiumPC and get its dual-core or single-core 64-bit / x86 based CPU, along with a casing unit available in different colors. If you are interested, its release is expected to arrive June onwards, whereas the company’s non-chromium modular PC is dated for a July 4 release.
Hopefully, the ChromeOS that we know today will mature in the next few months.
